taking to cycling

Since coming back from a wonderful trip to Yosemite, being refreshed by the presence of dear friends, reminded of the incredible gift of marriage, invigorated by the clear evergreen air and beautiful star-filled nights in the hot springs, Tim and I have settled back into the routine of things. We have tried to take an inventory of areas that we could simplify and decided to sell one of our cars and get bikes. Saturday was spent at a bicycle store and now we are both riding on our new set of wheels! I wanted to get some clip-in shoes because it's easier to get momentum and power while cycling, but it took me a while to adjust. I didn't get off to a very smooth start--I first tried clipping into the pedals and feel over twice on our driveway while Tim and my dog stood watching. After a couple bruises I was off to the streets and now ride my bike to work. It's been quite a pleaser getting the exercise while traveling around town and I feel like I am somehow doing my part to cut down on oil consumption.
This is my favorite time of year--the evenings are cooler and the trees are starting to change orange, red, and yellow. Tim expressed today that he is feeling more encouraged about support raising and he continues to love his time spent solely on church activities. We are planning a Scum of the Earth Fundraising dinner for the end of September and hope to raise money for a building of our own someday. Your prayers are much appreciated! Tim is leading the effort--the members of the church are signing up to be table servers, cooks, and decorators. The whole event will be a wonderful way for members of the church to actively serve friends and family from the community that come to the dinner and express desire to learn more about the church and its calling.

Way to go with the bikes folks! I am so proud of you for pursuing simplicty and paying heed to the natural resource situation. I'm sure you'll be more and more concerned with the state of our air as you spend more and more time in it. It is so important for us to use nature as intended. Yesterday I read that one California-based organic farm (Earthbound) saved 1.4 million gallons of oil in 2005 just by avoiding the use of petroleum-based pesticides and fertilizers. Holy Cow ... or Holy Crop, rather.
Jess,
This is great!!! I love this blog business! I am so proud of you guys for making the car/bike trade. Even as winter approaches you are an undaunted bicyclist! I love you and look forward to staying more in-tune with the ins and outs of the "dunbar living".

Nice blog! And nice photos! Eric and Carolyn look naked. And why am I giving a thumbs up?? I am jealous that you have a bike and get to bike everywhere now. I still don't have bike here, though I'm thankful I can walk to most place. Please take some photos of your home for us and post them on your blog. Tonight we had our first Wednesday night meeting for our church-plant. This Sunday is our first Sunday meeting. Please pray for it!!
Love,
Rachel
I've been roming around all the friendlies' blogs and I just now came to yours! I feel weird posting everywhere but for this one I couldn't resist and Grace could guess why. I'm ALL about cycling since moving home to [the fortunately flat] Sacramento so news that you've taken to commuting by bike is so great to hear! I mean 'read.'
Since all three of us designers at work are into cycling and the account admins are runners, we started picking events to train for, and so this is to encourage you, to consider entering an event, a "ride." They're usually well supported, have various distance options, and have great food to boot! I mean to eat.
Commuting is great by bike. But it's also really nice to set aside time just to ride. I'm convinced at present that, to explore a region of large scope, there is no better pace than you have on a bike.
Hazaaahh! Thanks for sharing!
Isaac
